WHALE WATCHING TRIPS
Southern Right Whale got their name during the time they were hunted. Referred to, as the “right” whales to kill, because they float when dead.
Interesting facts about these whales:
- Visit our bays from June to December.
- Come to our sheltered bays to mate, calve, nurse their
young and rest.
- Has no dorsal fin.
- When it exhales, there is a V-shape cloud above the water.
- Presence of callosities on its head. These callosities are
white warts or rough skin patches.
- One female will mate with a number of males.
- Female calve one calf every three years and measures about
13.9 meters.
- Males is generally slightly smaller.
- Calve is born during August and has an average length of
6.1 metres.
- Calves suckle for 4-8 months and drink up to 600 liters of
milk per day.
- These whales average weight is 41 tons, and have a life
expectancy of about 50 years.
- Called a baleen whale, instead of teeth it has long plates
hanging from the top jaw.
- Favourate food is small animals called copepods, which
they consume up to 600 kg per day.
2-hour Whale watching trips depart from Gansbaai harbour for a tour in Walker Bay. The boat is especially designed and custom build to do the whale watching tours. It is equipped with two 4 stroke Yamaha 225 hp petrol engines, whish is extremely quiet and pollution free. Our permit allows us to get within 50 meters of the whales. Curious whales might come right to the boat. To see these whales breach is truly an unforgettable experience.
Besides the Southern Right whales we often see Humpback and Bryde Whales, Common and Humpback Dolphin, Cape fur seals, Sun fish, Seabirds, African Penguin and Sharks on our trips. A whale watching trip is an experience that will live in your memory.
